Understanding Your Stress Window


Stress is part of being human. Chronic overwhelm is a different story.


We often talk about stress as though the goal is to eliminate it. But that isn't realistic. There will always be deadlines, difficult conversations, family responsibilities, unexpected problems, illness, financial pressures and changes we didn't ask for. The more useful question is: How much can your system handle right now AND what helps increase that capacity?


One way to understand this is through your window of distress tolerance.


Imagine You Have a Window


Your nervous system has a range within which you can experience stress without becoming completely overwhelmed. When your window is wide, you may be able to handle a demanding day, a difficult conversation or an unexpected problem and still think clearly, regulate your emotions and recover afterward. When your window becomes narrow, things that normally wouldn't bother you can suddenly feel like too much.


You may notice:


  • Less patience
  • Irritability or feeling easily overwhelmed
  • Racing thoughts
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling emotionally reactive
  • Trouble relaxing
  • Poor sleep
  • Feeling like everyone needs something from you
  • Less capacity for everyday problems
  • A sense that you are constantly “on”
  • Feeling like you don’t recognize yourself


This does not necessarily mean that you have become less resilient as a person. Your available biological capacity may have changed.


What Determines the Size of Your Window?


Your ability to cope with stress is influenced by much more than your mindset. Your brain is constantly receiving information from the rest of your body, and your body is responding to signals from the brain. This creates a continuous, two-way conversation involving your:


  • Nervous system
  • Hormones
  • Sleep and circadian rhythm
  • Metabolism and energy availability
  • Immune and inflammatory systems
  • Physical health
  • Pain
  • Nutrition
  • Movement and fitness
  • Relationships and social support
  • Psychological health
  • Environment


This is why the same person can have very different levels of stress tolerance at different points in their life. You may be able to handle a demanding workload when you are sleeping well, eating regularly, exercising, socially connected and feeling healthy. Add several months of poor sleep, hormonal changes, chronic pain and caregiving responsibilities and suddenly the same workload feels impossible.


The circumstances may not have changed as much as your capacity to respond to them has.


Think About Both the Bucket and the Drain


Another way I like to visualize stress is as a bucket. Every demand adds another drop. Some drops are obvious:


  • Work
  • Parenting
  • Caregiving
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Financial concerns
  • Illness
  • Major life changes
  • Others are easier to overlook:
  • Poor sleep
  • Chronic pain
  • Inflammation
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Skipping meals
  • Excessive alcohol
  • Too much caffeine
  • Overtraining
  • Constant stimulation
  • Lack of recovery
  • Social isolation
  • Consuming distressing news or social media throughout the day


One drop usually isn't the problem. It is the accumulation. But there is another part of the equation that we often forget: The drain.


What helps drain the bucket?


  • Sleep
  • Recovery
  • Movement
  • Nourishing food
  • Supportive relationships
  • Time outdoors
  • Enjoyment and play
  • Boundaries
  • Asking for help
  • Feeling capable and supported
  • Meaningful connection
  • Time away from constant demands


When the bucket fills faster than it can drain, eventually it overflows. This is often what people mean when they say: “I don't know what's wrong with me. I just can't handle things the way I used to.”


Hormones Can Change the Context


This becomes particularly relevant during perimenopause. Estrogen is not only a reproductive hormone. Estradiol also acts throughout the brain and influences systems involved in mood regulation, cognition, energy, sleep and stress responsiveness.


During perimenopause, estrogen exposure can become much more variable before eventually declining. For some women, these hormonal changes are associated with significant changes in mood, sleep, anxiety, irritability or cognitive function. Importantly, this doesn't mean that every emotional change during midlife is caused by estrogen. And it doesn't mean that a particular estrogen level can tell us exactly how someone should feel.


Hormones are part of the context. Not the entire explanation.


A person going through perimenopause may simultaneously be experiencing:


  • Changing hormone patterns
  • Sleep disruption
  • Increased caregiving responsibilities
  • Career demands
  • Aging parents
  • Relationship changes
  • Changes in body composition or metabolic health
  • Chronic stress
  • Less time for self, white space, self-care, or simply doing nothing


All of these factors can interact. This is why two people can go through the same stage of perimenopause and have completely different experiences.


Your Stress Response Is Trying to Protect You


The stress response is not inherently harmful. Your HPA axis — the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system — is one of the body's major stress-response systems. When your brain detects a threat or significant demand, this system helps mobilize resources for action. Cortisol is part of this response. In an acute situation, this is exactly what we want. You need to become more alert. Your body needs to mobilize energy. Your attention needs to shift toward the immediate challenge. The problem arises when the system is repeatedly activated without enough opportunity for recovery.


Modern life can create a strange situation in which the body continues receiving signals of demand long after the original stressor has passed, or where there is simply no meaningful period of recovery between one demand and the next. This can contribute to a state of hyperarousal: feeling tired but wired, restless, unable to switch off, sleeping poorly or feeling constantly “on.” This is why I don't think of cortisol as the enemy. Cortisol is a messenger. If we focus only on lowering cortisol without asking why the system is being activated, we may miss the bigger picture. Instead, I want to ask: What is repeatedly asking your body to remain on alert?


Sometimes the answer is psychological.

Sometimes it is physiological.

Often, it is both.


What Can Narrow Your Window?


There is no single list that applies to everyone, but some common contributors include:


Sleep disruption
Poor sleep reduces your ability to regulate emotions, tolerate stress and recover.
Chronic pain
Pain is itself a stress signal and can continually consume biological resources.
Hormonal changes
Perimenopause, menopause and other hormonal transitions can alter sleep, mood and stress responsiveness in susceptible individuals.
Metabolic stress
Poor metabolic health can affect energy availability, inflammation and overall physiological resilience.
Too much demand
Sometimes the answer isn't another supplement or stress-management technique.
Sometimes there is simply too much on your plate.
Too little recovery
Exercise is beneficial, but so is recovery. Constantly pushing without adequate rest can become another demand on the system.
Social isolation
Humans are social organisms. Supportive relationships can help us regulate stress and feel safe, capable and connected.
Constant information exposure
News, social media and digital communication can keep the brain exposed to a steady stream of perceived threats and demands.
Sometimes deliberately stepping away from the information stream is not about avoidance. It is a form of nervous-system hygiene.


The Goal Isn't to Eliminate Stress


The goal is to increase your adaptive capacity. Adaptive capacity is your ability to respond to changing circumstances and return toward balance afterward. And importantly, it changes. You may have a wider window during one season of life and a narrower one during another.


That means the question isn't: “Why am I not handling this better?” A more useful question is: “What has changed my capacity and what would help restore it?”


Start With the Foundations


You don't need to overhaul your life overnight. Start by asking what would give your system more capacity.


Protect your sleep
Consistent sleep and wake times, morning light, evening darkness and adequate recovery are foundational.
Move your body
Regular physical activity can support mood, metabolic health, sleep and stress regulation. The right amount depends on your current capacity.
Eat consistently and nourish yourself
Your brain and body need adequate energy and nutrients. Skipping meals or chronically under-eating can add another physiological demand.
Build recovery into your day
Recovery doesn't have to mean an hour of meditation. It may be a walk, quiet time, reading, breathing exercises, time outside or simply doing something that doesn't require you to perform.
Strengthen supportive relationships
Connection matters. Spend time with people who help you feel grounded, understood and supported.
Create boundaries
Sometimes increasing your capacity means reducing the number of demands entering the system.
A boundary is not selfish.
It can be a form of health care.
Ask for help
You do not need to wait until your bucket is overflowing.
Support from family, friends, therapists, physicians, naturopathic doctors or other healthcare professionals can be an important part of restoring capacity.
Make room for things that bring you joy
Joy is not frivolous.
Pleasure, play, laughter, creativity, nature and meaningful experiences are part of a healthy human life.


What I Look At Clinically


When someone tells me they feel chronically stressed or overwhelmed, I don't want to assume that the answer is simply “manage your stress better.” I want to understand why their window may have narrowed. Depending on the person, this may include looking at:


  • Sleep quality and circadian rhythm
  • Menstrual cycle and perimenopausal symptoms
  • Thyroid function
  • Metabolic health
  • Nutrition and energy intake
  • Physical activity and recovery
  • Chronic pain or illness
  • Medications
  • Mood and mental health
  • Life circumstances and caregiving demands
  • Social connection
  • Alcohol and caffeine
  • The person's perception of their ability to cope


Sometimes there is a clear physiological contributor that needs to be addressed. Sometimes the most important intervention is psychological support. Sometimes the answer is a change in circumstances or boundaries. And sometimes we need to work on several pieces at the same time.


There is no single “stress treatment” because there is no single cause of feeling overwhelmed.


Your Capacity Can Change


If you are feeling like everything has suddenly become too much, I don't want you to interpret that as a personal failure. Your capacity is dynamic. It responds to what your body and life are asking of you.


Rather than asking yourself: “Why can't I handle this anymore?” Try asking: “What is filling my bucket?” Or “What would help create a bigger drain?” Or “What would help widen my window?”


Sometimes the answer is better sleep.
Sometimes it is treating a physical health issue.
Sometimes it is addressing hormonal changes.
Sometimes it is therapy.
Sometimes it is exercise or, temporarily, less exercise and more recovery.
Sometimes it is medication.
Sometimes it is asking for help, changing a boundary, stepping away from social media or admitting that your current workload isn't sustainable.
And sometimes it is simply recognizing that you are carrying more than one person was ever meant to carry alone.


The takeaway


Stress is part of life. Being chronically overwhelmed does not have to be your baseline.


Your nervous system is constantly adapting to the demands placed on you. The goal isn't to create a life without stress. It is to create enough capacity, recovery, connection and support that the inevitable stresses of life don't continually exceed your ability to respond.


Your bucket will always receive drops. The work is to understand what is filling it and how to drain it.
